about

The EZRAnomicon tells the story of Ray Mundt, a hard-boiled, nihilistic detective sent to New Orleans to investigate a series of bizarre, ritualistic murders. While there, he encounters a voodoo priestess who steals his soul (track 1 - Compulsion), but is then inducted into the ranks of the undead savior of all mankind (track 2 - Zombie Jesus), whereupon he descends into righteous madness (track 3 - The EZRAnomicon). Soon, he begins to terrorize the world, murdering at will along with the rest of his undead, immortally damned flock (track 4 - I Could Run), until he descends completely into lunatic delusion, believing all those around him to be monsters he must kill in order to save his own soul (track 5 - Destroy All Monsters). This vast, unprecedented killing spree is what leads to the criminal investigation heard in the sample at the beginning of track 1, bringing the EP full-circle and allowing Mundt to tell his story from his own point-of-view all over again on a second listen. This is what The EZRAnomicon is about, narratively; thematically, it is about the danger of religious fervor, and the idea that those who take it upon themselves to destroy "evil" are often, in fact, the true source of evil; musically, it is about dope beats and fresh rhymes.

Production credits:
Track 1 - DJ Elsewhere; track 2 - Strange Matter; track 3 - Tankhead; track 4 - D'jo (slipmats radio, freshmoon, TLA); track 5 - CRD. All lyrics and vocals by Tom Swifty, except track 2, featuring lyrics and vocals by Phillip Morris and Sean Anonymous. Turntablism on tracks 1 and 3 by DJ Elsewhere. Recorded and engineered by Sin HeavyGrind at HeavyGrind Studios, Queens, New York; Phillip's verse on track 2 recorded by Eva Green at Eva Green's Bedroom; Sean's verse on track 2 recorded by Tony Phantom at the Phantom Lab. Note: the photo credits listed on the insert are actually incorrect. In fact, the front cover photo was originally taken by the lovely and talented Stephanie Burnes, and the insert photo was taken by Deborah Getsug (I believe she got married and has a different last name now; we're not really in touch anymore). I gave credit for these photos to the best of my memory, which was apparently wildly inaccurate in this case. Cover and insert design by Jason Volk.
