Nostalgia

from Surreal Talk by Tom Swifty

/

about

This is absolutely one of the most personal songs I've ever written. It started as a poem, which I performed in competition at the National Poetry Slam in Austin, Texas in 2006, with the first ever St. Paul Slam Team (who went on to win two years in a row without me, in 2009 and 2010). I reworked it a bit to make it rhyme better and included some new bars about my good friend Justin Flesher, who tragically left us a few years ago. Not to be too big a downer, though, with this song I tried to capture the bittersweet feeling of looking back at a life that can never exist again. "I got my first lay like everyone else: nervous and awkward."
