To A Hooker in Minneapolis

from Surreal Talk by Tom Swifty

about

Another song that started as a writing prompt, this one directly from Curtis X. Meyer himself: "Write a persona poem as a voice from a song… If the poem is from the POV of the song's subject, try to address the singer / band." I thought it would be interesting a do a rap song response to a non-rap song, and Tom Waits' "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" is one of my all-time favorites. It has the saddest punchline of any song I've ever heard: "I'll be eligible for parole come Valentine's Day." The shout-out to "everybody who contributed to the Kickstarter campaign" is basically just a joke, since I eventually decided, after recording that and sending it to France for mixing, not to do a Kickstarter campaign. Instead, I figured I'd let all of you decide what the album was worth to you and donate that to me here (hint, hint). I also credit only Jason Volk for the "artwork and design," and a fine job he did with the design, but the photography was actually by Keagan Fuller (www.imdb.com/name/nm4463106/). This was recorded before the artwork had been chosen, so I didn't get to give Keagan the credit he deserves for his awesome work.
